Wastewater Insulation and Cladding

Wastewater Insulation and Cladding, Birmingham

Severn Trent is one of the UK’s largest water and wastewater companies, with over 8 million people being supplied with water across the Midlands and parts of Wales. In 2023, Severn Trent announced that it would invest over £800 million in its network to improve water quality and network resilience against the impacts of climate change.

They’re actively engaged in sustainability programmes due to their commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 and to improve the water quality of the region’s rivers.

Project Details

Severn Trent’s Minworth site is its largest sewage treatment works and wastewater treatment facility, serving customers in the Birmingham area. It’s also home to an Advanced Water Treatment Plant (AWTP). Over time, the insulation and cladding on the exhausts for their heat exchangers had both corroded and deteriorated badly due to weather conditions.

Jade Insulation were appointed as the industrial insulation contractor to make repairs and design an effective thermal insulation system along with stainless steel cladding.

Wastewater Insulation and Cladding Thermally Efficient

Our Impact

The old insulation and cladding needed to be replaced to guard against unnecessary heat loss. Heat loss can significantly affect the operational efficiency of heat exchangers, which can affect energy consumption. New, more thermally efficient insulation would not only provide greater thermal efficiency but would also create a safer working environment by reducing high surface temperatures and noise levels.

The operating life of the heat exchangers would also be extended.

Wastewater Insulation and Cladding of 50mm 128kg/m3 Superwool insulation

Our Solution

Having consulted with Severn Trent, the chosen approach was to install an initial layer of 50mm 128kg/m3 Superwool insulation. This was followed by an additional layer of 50mm mineral wool wired mat. This was then clad with bright stainless-steel cladding to provide excellent corrosion resistance and good aesthetics.

Wastewater Insulation and Cladding Operating Efficiency

Our Work & Conclusion

  • Ensured that heat loss was minimised to ensure operating efficiency.
  • Provides a safer working environment by reducing potentially harmful surface temperatures and noise levels.
  • Reduced thermal degradation of surrounding equipment by reducing the ambient temperature and minimising the expansion and contraction of associated equipment and joints caused by excessive temperature swings.
  • Protected critical infrastructure from corrosion and mechanical damage, increasing operating lifespan to reduce long-term operating costs.

By appointing Jade Insulation as their chosen industrial insulation services, Severn Trent ensured that the heat exchangers at Minworth operate effectively and efficiently, even in severe environmental conditions. This ensures they maintain operational stability, whilst extending the lifespan of critical infrastructure. So safeguarding Severn Trent’s investment in the Minworth Sewage Treatment Works.
