
Pipework Insulation and Trace Heating, at Sheffield Asphalt Repair Plant
Billian UK Limited specialise in industrial road/asphalt repair materials. They have developed a novel process that recycles waste tyres into a high-strength and versatile glue for a range of industrial applications. This is used in various sectors, from roads and service stations through to airports. It’s use lowers costs and reduces the carbon footprint.
Their work through Roadmender Asphalt aids the repair of potholes, narrow trenches and around ironwork, helping improve our road transport system.
Key Technical Details
- The Elastomac product they produce is an eco-friendly, non-invasive product that reduces the carbon footprint of patch repairs by 85%.
- It replaces fossil fuel bitumen and avoids the incineration of waste tyres.
- As a flowable material that can be poured to adhere strongly to the surface, this allows repairs to be completed in far less time.

Impact and Our Solution
We were appointed as the industrial insulation contractor to ensure efficient and effective thermal insulation installation for the bitumen line, to maintain a constant operating temperature of 160 °C.
Having reviewed the drawings, temperature profile, and specification from the client, we evaluated the thermal efficiency required and chose Rockwool as the best option on a price/performance basis. The pipework was all protected with Aluzinc cladding, given its mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. To maintain the required operating temperature of 160 °C, a mineral-insulated trace heating system was designed and installed.
As a manufacturer of removable insulative covers, we produced covers for flanges to enable easy access. These were produced at our Rotherham HQ to ISO standards.
