Industrial Insulation Services, Water Recycling Centre in Somerset
Wessex Water are a regional water and wastewater utility company serving Southwest England. They supply safe drinking water and sewage treatment to roughly 2.9 million customers throughout Somerset, Wiltshire, Dorset and Bristol. Now owned by YTL Corporation and headquartered in Bath, the company manages multiple sites to deliver and treat hundreds of millions of litres of water each day, under the oversight of Ofwat and the Environment Agency.
Wessex Water are focused on service reliability, environmental protection and sustainability. By maintaining and upgrading their network and ensuring regulatory requirements are met, they work to maintain the right balance between affordability and environmental performance.

Project Details
Their Cheddar Water Recycling Centre (WRC) is a wastewater treatment facility serving the Cheddar area and surrounding communities. Its primary role is to treat sewage and return cleaned water safely to the environment. This site is part of a broader network of over 150 water recycling centres throughout Somerset, which are critical to protecting river quality and public health.

The Impact
Cheddar WRC plays a critical part in protecting the quality of the local rivers and ensuring public health standards are maintained by employing biological processes and modern tertiary treatment systems. Recent upgrades have established tighter phosphorus removal standards, reducing the impact of nutrient pollution on sensitive waterways.
Jade Insulation were appointed as an industrial insulation contractor to provide both industrial insulation, insulative jackets and trace heating to ensure operational stability throughout the year.

Our Solution
Having reviewed the drawings, climatic conditions, and specification, we evaluated the thermal efficiency required and chose 40mm Paroc stone wool insulation as the best option on a price/performance basis. This was coupled with a trace-heating installation to prevent freezing in particularly cold conditions. The DN150 storm return pipework was then protected with Aluzinc cladding, given its mechanical strength and corrosion resistance.
We also designed, manufactured and supplied removable insulated covers for the likes of valves and flanges to enable easy access for maintenance.

- Ensures that the WRC runs efficiently and effectively, no matter what the weather.
- Prevents freezing, negating unplanned outages, ensuring ongoing supply to customers, whilst negating any impact on the water re-entering the rivers.
- Protects critical infrastructure from climatic conditions, corrosion and mechanical damage for many years to come.
- Reduces thermal expansion and contraction of joints, avoiding undue stress and potential outages.
- Creates a safer environment for personnel through the avoidance of extreme temperatures.
By appointing Jade Insulation as their chosen industrial insulating contractor, critical infrastructure was protected, ensuring operational stability, whilst enhancing the lifespan of the affected areas of the site. This will protect their investment and reduce long-term operating costs.
