Industrial Insulation Installation, Innovative Textile Manufacturing

Industrial Insulation Installation Textile Manufacturing, Durham

The Kuraray Group is a global chemical company headquartered in Tokyo. They develop pioneering technology to improve the environment and enhance the quality of life. Founded in 1926, they commercialised the production of synthetic rayon, which was a cutting-edge technology at that time. They were also the first to commercialise polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibre, under the brand name KURALON™. They now produce resins and films, chemicals and elastomers, dental materials and activated carbon.

Key Technical Details

Kuraray appointed Jade Insulation to supply and install industrial insulation and trace heating at their Chemviron site in Durham. Chemviron is a global leader in the production of both activated carbon and activated carbon cloth, under the brand name Flexsorb®. They also produce activated carbon in granular form. This provides effective solutions against potentially harmful gases, particles, vapours. This has applications for the military, nuclear industry and the biological/chemical industry.

  • A multi-phase project was established to expand their production facility in Durham.
  • Industrial insulation was required to guard against freezing and to maintain efficient production.
  • Dosing tanks would also require both lagging and trace heating.

Our Solution

Having reviewed the drawings, temperature profile, and specification from the client, we evaluated the thermal efficiency required and chose mineral wool as the best option on a price/performance basis. This varied in thickness from 30 to 70mm. However, due to narrow pipe spacings, certain sections of pipework were insulated using materials with a thermal efficiency to enable thinner wall thicknesses. The pipework was all protected with Aluzinc cladding, given its mechanical strength and corrosion resistance.

We also manufactured and supplied removable covers for the flanges to enable easy access. Dosing tanks and certain areas of pipework were also protected with removable insulative covers and trace-heated to maintain a temperature of +5 °C at -10 °C ambient temperature when static. All insulative jackets were produced to ISO standards.

Our Work & Conclusion

  • Ensures that the plant works efficiently and effectively, which reduces energy consumption and therefore reduces the carbon footprint.
  • It will prevent freezing, negating unplanned outages, and ensuring ongoing supply to customers.
  • It will protect critical infrastructure from climatic conditions and mechanical damage for many years to come.
  • Will reduce thermal expansion and contraction of joints, avoiding undue stress and potential outages.
  • Create a safer environment for personnel through the avoidance of extreme temperatures, whilst offering acoustic insulation to reduce noise levels.

By appointing Jade Insulation, the thermal efficiency of the site was optimised. This will ensure significant energy is saved, reducing both the operating costs and helping them achieve CO2 reductions. As well as protecting critical infrastructure, it ensures a safer working environment for both their personnel and contractors. We are now commencing Phase Two of the project.
