
Industrial Insulation Installation at Sewage Treatment, Yorkshire
Yorkshire Water is committed to improving water quality in the rivers across its region. A key focus is reducing phosphorus entering rivers via treated wastewater returned to the environment. The reduction of phosphorus levels can make a significant difference to water quality in our rivers.
Ward and Burke were appointed as the Detailed Design and Delivery Contractor for Yorkshire Water’s £60m upgrade of their Knostrop Sewage Treatment Works, which is YW’s largest wastewater treatment site. This project was part of a £790m investment by 2025 in phosphorus removal. The upgrade of the site will substantially reduce the phosphorus levels in the River Aire. This benefits not only the watercourse but also the wildlife within.

Key Technical Details & Project Scope
The site serves nearly a million people and has a full flow to treatment (FFT) of 5600 l/s.
Operational Upgrades:
- This AMP7 project had a collaborative project team that introduced enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) processes into the biological treatment stage.
- It also included a tertiary solids removal (TSR) plant built to treat the final effluent.
- The upgrade ensures Knowstrup Stw complies with the new Water Framework Directive of 0.4 mg/l Total Phosphorus and 4 mg/l Total Iron consent.
Scope of our Project
Ward and Burke appointed Jade Insulation to supply and install industrial insulation to a gas booster skid to prevent condensation inside the biogas pipework.

Having reviewed the drawings and specifications from the client, we evaluated the thermal efficiency required and chose 50 mm mineral wool as the best option in terms of insulation.
This was then protected with Aluzinc cladding given its mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. We also designed and manufactured various insulative jackets to ISO standards for the valves and any additional areas that required removal covers for easy access.

- It will prevent freezing, negating unplanned outages, ensuring ongoing supply to customers.
- Will protect critical infrastructure from climatic conditions and mechanical damage for many years to come.
- Significantly reduces thermal expansion and contraction of joints, avoiding undue stress and potential outages.
- Creates a safer environment for personnel through the avoidance of extreme temperatures, whilst offering acoustic insulation to reduce noise levels.
Conclusion
By appointing Jade Insulation, the gas booster skid could operate effectively and efficiently regardless of the climatic conditions, and this important part of the asset was protected long-term, reducing operating costs. It also creates a safer working environment.
