Industrial Insulation Installation, at Severn Trent’s Melbourne STW
Severn Trent is one of the UK’s largest water and wastewater companies, supplying water to over 8 million people across the Midlands and parts of Wales. In 2023, Severn Trent announced that it would invest over £800 million in its network to improve water quality and network resilience against the impacts of climate change. They’re actively engaged in sustainability programmes to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 and improve the water quality of the region’s rivers.
Project Details & Impact
The Melbourne Sewage Treatment Works site upgrade is part of a £ 70 million project to improve water quality in Melbourne and the surrounding area.
The project involves increasing treatment capacity, replacing ageing infrastructure, and constructing and installing new equipment for wastewater processing and storage. PJT Pumping Services, which offer a single-source solution for design, mechanical, electrical, fabrication, and maintenance for pumping systems, were appointed to carry out part of this work. They, in turn, appointed Jade Insulation as the industrial insulation contractor.
The pumping systems installed by PJT Pumping Services required effective industrial insulation to protect the pumping units and associated pipework from freezing and to ensure they operated effectively and efficiently even in harsh weather conditions.

Our Solution
After consulting with the client and evaluating the required thermal efficiency, the chosen approach was to install 25mm Armafex. This is a flexible elastomeric foam insulation that’s pre-formed for pipework. Due to its closed-cell structure, it offers excellent water resistance and acts as its own vapour barrier, minimising condensation.
This all offers excellent corrosion resistance. It’s also an ideal solution for confined spaces or for areas with numerous bends. The pipework insulation was then protected by 0.5mm Aluzinc cladding, which offers both good corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. We also designed and manufactured insulating jackets at our Rotherham HQ to cover valves, pumps, actuators, and the pipework to the washdown hose reel. This enabled easy access for maintenance and inspection.
