Industrial Insulation of Pipework at Watchet Harbour, in Somerset
Wessex Water is a leading regional utility company that provides water supply and wastewater services across Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire, and Bristol. With close to 2.9 million customers, the company supplies drinking water and treats sewage for homes and businesses throughout the region.
The Wessex Water Group places a strong emphasis on long-term investment in infrastructure and environmental sustainability, whilst offering community support.
To support their work at Watchet Harbour, Jade Insulation was appointed as the industrial insulation contractor to insulate and protect a section of pipework spanning a bridge at the harbour. Whilst only a small job, it posed challenges given the significant tidal changes. This took planning with both Wessex and the Council Authorities to ensure the pipeline would not be submerged at any point during the project.
Our Impact
The correct measures had to be taken to ensure that the section of pipework would be protected from saltwater and corrosion long term, to ensure ongoing services would be unaffected and to enable decent service life.
Previously, the salt water had slowly corroded the cladding, leaving both the insulation and pipework open to the elements.

Our Solution & Our Work
Having liaised with Wessex Water, we chose 50mm Paroc stone wool insulation as the best option to insulate the DN150 pipework. This was then protected with 0.5mm Aluzinc Martyr cladding, which offers superior protection to standard Aluzinc cladding in coastal and saltwater environments, given its sacrificial nature. Due to its location and potential saltwater ingress, further protection was added by encasing it with Denso tape. An anticorrosion fabric tape, impregnated with a waxy petrolatum compound, that offers an airtight and watertight seal, used to protect steel surfaces in challenging environments. Our work led to:
- Offered a superior solution to the problems they had faced in the past, due to the use of more specialised materials.
- Prevents freezing, negating unplanned outages, ensuring ongoing supply to customers.
- Protects critical infrastructure from climatic conditions, corrosion and mechanical damage for many years to come.
